Stopping and Reversing Sun Damage

Gone are the carefree days of believing that sun exposure is harmless. In healthy doses, sunlight can reduce stress, boost immunity and metabolism, and help the body synthesize vitamin D. In excess, sun exposure can wreak havoc on skin, as well as the immune system. We know now that sun damage continues after you go back inside. We also know that the effort expended by the body to repair DNA damage caused by sun exposure produces harmful byproducts known as free radicals. Free radicals are the orchestrators of wrinkled and sagging skin, and a pre-cursor to more serious health problems down the road. There are two phases in sun damage treatment: prevention and reversal, and there are a multitude or products that can aid in doing both, when used in conjunction with the development of better sun habits.

Sun Damage Prevention

sun-damageWhen it comes to prevention, turn to trusty sunscreen – and new studies tell us that spray doesn’t cut it, unless you rub it in thoroughly after spraying. Always apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure; cut it too close, and swimming and sweating will void your efforts. For the sensitive skin on your face, use a sunblock stick or a lotion, and reapply all over your body every two hours for continued coverage.

Use common sense with your sunblock. Plan your activities in direct sunlight in the morning or late afternoon; 10AM-2PM is the block of time where the sun’s rays are harshest. Wear a hat, preferably wide-brimmed, that will protect your face, shoulders, and chest. Polarized sunglasses will help reduce damage to the thin tissue of the eyelid and cornea. If you do develop moles or notice significant changes to your skin after sun exposure, consult your dermatologist as soon as possible to head off complications.

Reversing the Effects of Sun Damage

If you have already fallen victim to sun damage, there are ways to partially reverse the process. Treatments such as Juvederm or Restylane can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin over time. Your diet can also be used as a weapon against skin aging: berries, nuts, leafy greens, and—surprisingly—brewed coffee are all antioxidant-rich foods that will minimize sun damage during exposure and reverse damage long after.

It is much easier to prevent sun damage than it is to reverse it. Some people show few immediate side effects to prolonged sun exposure, but 40-50% of Americans who live to age 65 will develop some form of skin cancer according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. The Foundation also claims that almost 5 million people are treated for some form of skin cancer in the U.S. every year. Many of skin cancer’s iterations are easily treated: some, such as melanoma, are not. An estimated 10,000 people will lose their lives to melanoma this year. With some simple routine and product regimen changes, the harmful complications of excess sun exposure can be reversed or prevented altogether.

The Benefits of Belotero Balance

When we are young, many of us spend hours and hours in the sun playing, working and relaxing. It isn’t until we get older that we start to realize just how much damage it can do to our skin. As you age, the sun and your environment will take a toll on your skin and it will start losing its ability to stay moist. In turn, this will cause fine lines and wrinkles to form. It is almost unavoidable unless you douse yourself with sunscreen or never leave the house. But there is a solution. If you want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on your skin then you should look into Belotero.

belotero-logoBelotero is a new dermal filler that works with your skin to soften and smooth out imperfections. It can even enhance your natural features like plumping your lips, rounding out your cheekbones and highlighting your facial contours. Belotero is highly sought after because of its many benefits. It can treat:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Lines around the mouth

Belotero can also:

  • Make age roughened hands supple again
  • Plump up your lips
  • Round out your cheekbones

Belotero is one of the most advanced dermal fillers on the market and unlike some other fillers, it lends your skin a very natural look. Some people are leery of using dermal fillers because they are afraid the application will be too difficult or painful. Belotero is a breeze to apply, it doesn’t take very long and there is little to no pain. To go through the full process it will take you about twenty minutes and most people can immediately go back to their everyday routine like nothing happened. If you want to discreetly enhance your natural features without any complicated procedures, Belotero is the best choice. It hydrates and revitalizes your skin giving it a healthy glow that people will notice.

Juvederm or Restylane? Which should You Choose?

Before going into whether Juvederm® or Restylane® is right for you, let’s discuss what they are. When men or women start to develop lines or wrinkles, it tends to give them a prematurely aged appearance. There are surgical procedures that will reduce puffiness and smooth out wrinkles but they are too extreme for some people to contemplate. Those people often prefer a Dermal Filler because it is non invasive and can plump up areas of your face and smooth out lines. Two of the most popular Dermal Fillers are Juvederm and Restylane.

Both Juvederm® and Restylane®  fillers are made from a substance called hyaluronic acid which is a natural molecule found in the body.

restylane_logo_clear-300x114When introduced into the skin, the acid binds with water and then starts to expand, filling out and plumping up the skin. Basically, they smooth out the wrinkles from the inside.

Choosing between the two often comes down to personal preference but keep the following in mind when making your choice:

  • Restylane® is a firmer compound so it is better for areas like the lips and deeper lines that require more support.
  • Both are gels but Juvederm® has a smooth consistency while Restylane® has a more granular consistency.
  • Juvederm® is considered to be longer lasting because it has 35% more hyaluronic acid in it than Restylane® does.
  • Duration varies greatly from individual to individual but in general, Restylane® lasts for around 6 months while Juvederm® can last up to a year.

Whether it be Juvederm® or Restylane® that you think could be right for you. The AgeLess Center can help. Give us a call 404.233.5255 to schedule your next appointment.

  • Redefining your “lipstick line”, or line around the lips.

Why should I choose Perlane® for my anti-aging treatment?

One of the top advantages of Perlane® is that it is a non-surgical solution to lines and wrinkles on your face. Also, like other dermal fillers of it’s kind, it is composed of hyaluronic acid (HA). This chemical is naturally produced by your body, it’s much like your skin’s naturally made moisturizer. As you age your body produces less of this HA and that is where Perlane® treatments will step in to help you.

The (HA) chemical in Perlane® will bond with the water molecules in your face, replenishing moisture and elasticity. This creates firmness in the skin to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and also to plump the lips.

How is Botox® Cosmetic Different From Dermal Fillers?

As the most trusted Botox® Cosmetic treatment center in Atlanta we are often asked about the differences in Botox® Cosmetic and popular dermal fillers such as Restylane® or Juverderm®, for example.

The main uses of either of these treatments is the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles that can appear on your face, neck or chin over time. Generally the first place that these wrinkles will appear is between your brow, on the forehead and around the eyes (crow’s feet). This is because those muscles are the ones that create the most of your facial expressions on a daily basis. Diminishing fine lines and wrinkles is the main goal of both Botox® Cosmetic and dermal fillers, so that brings us to our question… [Read more…]
